To go to Malaysia or not to go to Malaysia?

As a 3rd year student, I have the opportunity to go on an international study tour to Sarawak, Malaysia. It's a 3 week cultural experience on which they take 5 midwifery students & 10 nursing students. Since I started this degree, I have always planned to do the international study tour. I've warned Joe about it from day 1! Now that the opportunity's here, I'm not so sure it's actually in my best interests to go. That's not to say, it wouldn't be an amazing experience but I'm worried I won't get enough clinical experience (ie. births!) while I'm over there. I couldn't bear the thought of spending 3 weeks away from my family only to return home & have to spend 3-4 weeks doing extra shifts in delivery suite to get my birth requirements for registration.

In addition to that, the cost of the trip increased substantially this year to approx. $3500 compared to approx. $1200 last year. I'm told there is a strong possibility of receiving a study grant from the university to help with the costs but there's no guarantee of receiving one or of how much it would be worth.

To cut a long story short, I ended up submitting a death knock application for the study tour but I'm still unsure of whether I'll accept a position should one be forthcoming. I thought I'd table a little pros & cons list to help me make my decision:

Pros
* Potentially amazing cultural experience.
* 1st OS trip / opportunity to play tourist on days off.
* Will look good on my resume.
* Opportunity to do something different to the normal hospital placements.
* It means I'll be finished my course 1 month earlier than I otherwise will be (mid November instead of mid December).

Cons
* Cost
* Time away from my family (I'll miss Caitlyn & Emily's 1st school camp & also the big ballet competitions if I go. Although I might miss these things anyway if I'm here & working on those days).
* Uncertainty about the level of clinical experience able to be obtained over there/potential to have to do a lot of extra shifts back home.

Successful applicants will be notified next Friday (19th) with a $1000 deposit due the following Monday (23rd) so I really need to get it clear in my head whether I definitely want to go or not before then!
